The Games and Amusements Board initially started its operation in 1951 with the issuance of Executive Order No. 392. Through this particular EO as well as subsequent laws, decrees and resolutions, GAB is mandated the task of regulating and supervising professional sports in the country. Initially, the agency’s activities were confined solely to the regulation and supervision of limited number of professional sports particularly, boxing wrestling and karate, in accordance with EO No. 120 series of 1948. With the launching of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the advent of other professional sports in the country, the activities of the Board were broadened with the inclusion of authority over other professional sports and games in the country. On January 6, 1976, Presidential Decree No. 871 was signed into law – “Placing Professional Basketball and Other Professional Games under the Supervision of the Games and Amusements Board.”
